Breaking Through PCOS

Tools, language, and resources for the providers, counselors, therapists, and researchers who help women navigate PMOS / PCOS.

For Physicians

Most women with PMOS / PCOS go undiagnosed for years because the standard workup is incomplete. Please run a full hormone panel — total and free testosterone, DHEA-S, LH, FSH, prolactin, estradiol, progesterone, SHBG, AMH — alongside a full metabolic panel including fasting insulin, fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid panel, vitamin D, and thyroid (TSH, free T3, free T4, TPO antibodies). Use patient-centered language: PMOS is not just a fertility issue, and weight loss is not a treatment plan. Validate symptoms before suggesting birth control as the only option.

For Therapists & Counselors

PMOS impacts identity, body image, mood, anxiety, and self-worth long before a woman ever hears the diagnosis. Trauma-informed care helps clients grieve fertility uncertainty, process medical gaslighting, rebuild trust with their bodies, and untangle shame around hair growth, weight, acne, and irregular cycles. Screen for depression, anxiety, disordered eating, and the chronic stress of advocating for yourself in a system that minimizes women's pain.

For School Counselors & Educators

Symptoms often begin in adolescence — irregular or missed periods, acne, sudden weight gain, fatigue, and mood swings. Teen girls are frequently told to 'just wait it out' or are placed on birth control with no investigation. Encourage families to push for hormone and metabolic testing, validate the emotional toll on young women, and create safe spaces where girls can talk about their bodies without shame.

For Researchers

We need more inclusive research that centers Black women, women of color, lean PMOS phenotypes, adolescents, and women beyond reproductive years. Move past the fertility-only lens — study the cardiovascular, metabolic, mental health, and quality-of-life impacts across the full lifespan. Partner with patient communities like ours and let lived experience shape your hypotheses, recruitment, and outcomes.
